The first round of betting begins when each player receives one card. This card is usually dealt face-up. Each player is allowed to discard some cards.
The dealer then shuffles the deck. Once the shuffle is complete, the cards are distributed to the players in clockwise order. Players can then check, call, or raise. A raised bet is an increase in the amount of money that is being bet.
In the first betting interval, the first bettor must bet a minimum amount. He or she is the player who holds the highest ranking poker combination. If the first bettor doesn’t bet, the second bettor is called to do so.
After the first round of betting, the dealer deals the flop. The flop is the first set of three cards dealt face up after the first betting round.
Several rounds of betting are followed by a “showdown” when all hands are revealed. Players must then match the bets or fold.
